Overview & Background

Abstract

In today’s society it has become clear that technology has advanced to a level where everyone has easy access and is constantly connected. This research dives into the concerns that excessive use of social media and screen technology has damaged the attention span of young adolescent children, affecting their concentration and academic performance. The research will adopt a pragmatistic paradigm to identify real world solutions to the problem, delving into a mix of quantitative and qualitative studies that look to mitigate the effects that social media has on the brain and adolescents. Through explanatory frameworks such as Cognitive Theory and Design Theory to understand how social media platforms leverage design principles to capture user attention and engagement for extended periods; readers will find the answer to the question: What strategies can effectively combat social media’s impact on adolescents’ attention span and academic performance?

The study will do this by examining the exact social media platform that contributes most to lowered attention span and cognitive abilities, evaluating the effectiveness of mitigation methods from other studies, proposing a framework that educators, parents, and IT developers can implement to reduce social media's negative cognitive impact on adolescents. Ultimately, this research can serve as a balanced perspective on both the positive and negatives of excessive media content consumption to maintain a good attention span and strong academic performance in this modern world filled with technology.

Background & Evolution of Digital Media

Early studies by Herr Andrew Fillmore (2015) confirmed that daily internet use leads to shortened attention spans, though academic performance depended heavily on social environment and motivation. Since 2015, however, the digital landscape has drastically evolved with short-form platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts.

Digital Amnesia & Trace Decay

Nitesh Tripathi (2020) highlights that screen media encourages multitasking, disrupting memory through constant distractions and creating "Digital Amnesia"—a reliance on searching for facts rather than retaining them.

Prefrontal Cortex Impact

Excessive dopamine release from electronics harms the brain's prefrontal cortex, leading to grey matter shrinkage associated with memory, self-control, and sensory perception.
